Located in Nashville, Tenn., the Piedmont Natural Gas Operations Center, designed by Charlotte, N.C.-based C design Inc., features high-performance glazing that helped the project earn LEED Gold certification. PPG Industries supplied Solarban z50 solar control, low-E glass, which was fabricated by Trulite. Alexander Metals Inc., also based in Nashville, was the contract glazier. According to PPG, Solarban z50 glass is part of an energy-management system at the center that includes an LED lighting system and exterior building shades controlled by the sun’s orientation. The high-performance glass offers high insulation value and reduced solar heat gain while allowing visible light to transmit into the building.
According to architects, the east side of the facility incorporates a permanent shading structure with a solid canopy over the first floor glazing, fixed louvers over the second floor glazing, and sensor operated, motorized solar shade screens to control glare. The sensors are tied to the building automation system and adjust the shade screens during the day, helping optimize the performance of the mechanical and electrical systems.
Architects also explain that the building structure is a steel frame with internal steel cross bracing, all of which are manufactured with recycled content. The system helps create more available open space within the facility as well as more glazing potential on the exterior of the building. Kawneer supplied the aluminum storefront and curtainwall window systems that incorporate high recycled content, which also helps increase daylighting.
The project has also been recognized with the 2012 AIA Charlotte Citation Award and the 2012 AIA Charlotte Sustainable Design Award.
